Who Am I?
The journey to self-empowerment begins with asking ourselves a seemingly simple question:
Who Am I?
If we were to continually pose that question throughout the day, we could get a different answer each time depending on the circumstances of the moment.
And if we continued this practice routinely in our lives, we might soon see a pattern, a tendency to define ourselves solely by what we are doing at the moment, what role we may be playing in the experience, or how others may see us at that time.
But the truth is, we are so much more than that, so much more than what we think the present circumstances dictate.
And that is one of the variety of ways in which we tend to limit ourselves, by subconsciously answering “Who Am I?” with “I Am the Person Defined by this Experience”.
We can enhance our inner strength by expanding our sense of self beyond any limiting definitions.
So, let’s begin with a few simple practices. Here’s the first:
Practice #1
Purpose: To become more aware of how we define ourselves each moment.
Frequency: Multiple Times Daily
1. Immediately upon awakening, at various times throughout the day, and before you go to sleep, ask “Who Am I?”.
2. Take 3 deep breaths, focusing solely on each breath, and silently wait for an answer.
3. Notice whatever comes to you.
We needn’t analyze the answer, judge it, or draw any conclusions about it.
We only want to be conscious of it, if only for an instant, as we are simply practicing “awareness”.
